The photo of Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas created the idea for Lt. Col. (Dr.) Arunas Banionis' postage stamp design, which earned him first place in the Lithuania Post Postage Stamps Design Contest in May. Banionis, a 446th Aerospace Medicine Squadron flight surgeon, grew up collecting stamps and had an interest in Darius and Girėnas' transatlantic flight, which was the first flight across the Atlantic Ocean by Lithuanian-born pilots. Banionis was born and raised in the U.S., but is of Lithuanian decent and learned about Lithuanian culture as he grew up. (Courtesy photo/Lt. Col. Arunas Banionis)
