C-17 makes its first South Pole airdrop

McCHORD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash., - Ground crews recover cargo dropped from a McChord C-17 Dec. 20 in South Pole, Antarctic. This was the first use of a C-17 to airdrop supplies and equipment in the frigid climate of Antarctica. The aircrew consisted of Reservists from the 446th Airlift Wing and active-duty Airmen from the 62nd AW here. (National Science Foundation photo by Forest Banks)
