When your on-duty training time is limited, as it often is in the Reserve, it helps to be able to knock out some of it at home in your spare time. Computer-based training is available to Reservists with home computer Common Access Card readers through the Air Reserve Component Network.

Previously available through a dot com site, computer-based training through ARCNet includes subjects such as Self-Aid and Buddy Care, Information Protection, Suicide Prevention and others usually required to be completed annually.

ARCNet offers 10 Advanced Distributed Learning Service courses that can be downloaded from any dot com CAC-enabled computer through the Air Force Portal at this direct link: https://www.my.af.mil/arcnetprod/resnet/training/airmantrainingplan.aspx

Reservists can download a CBT to their home computer, complete the course, and then upload the results through ARCNet to be updated into their ADLS training record.

When Reservists spend their off-duty time on Reserve training, they can apply to be compensated.

"I don't think it's a well-known option, said Barbara Henson, 446th Airlift Wing executive officer. "But, people can use a telecommuting agreement to conduct their computer-based training at home and be paid for their time."

AFRC has developed a process for members to telecommute for ancillary training as documented in ARCNet. All approved computer-based training will be documented and verified at the unit level. The 446th AW's program follows the AFRC guidelines of granting unit commander's the authority to designate and approve non-ancillary training events for telecommuting purposes.

The Reservist must have an agreement signed by the approving authority prior to the telecommuting duty. The approving authority will be the squadron commander, operations officer, or their designee. The telecommuting period must be a minimum of four hours.

Telecommuting is a privilege, not a right, for the Reservist and will only be granted when it is in the best interest of the Air Force. It provides the Reservist a flexible opportunity to complete online training requirements. Travel and per diem are not authorized with this type of duty.
