New Psychological Health Program available to Reservists

MCCHORD FIELD --  "I Need Help" is a one of several new training opportunities now available to Reservists of the 446th Airlift Wing under a new Psychological Health Program here.

The program also includes one-to-one counseling, consultation and resource coordination. I Need Help is a 30-minute class that serves as an introduction on how or when to seek help before problems occur.

"Aside from the one-to-one [sessions], we're also available to do a lot of trainings and briefings," said Jeanne Morrow, the new Psychological Health Program director with the 446th Aerospace Medicine Squadron.

"We want to do prevention. We want to teach [Airmen] how to manage stress or how to effectively communicate so that they don't end up having a crisis," Morrow added.

Morrow is also a nurse and licensed clinical social worker who has been part of the Joint Base Lewis-McChord for almost 6 years. She previously worked with the Army Family Advocacy program at Lewis Main for 2 years, as well as the Air Force's Family Advocacy Program at McChord Field prior to joint-basing.

"If Reservists call me and have a question, I'm going to be of service to them," she said.

One-on-one services are available throughout the week and on primary UTA weekends by appointment or on a walk-in basis at Bldg. 691, the 446th Aerospace Medicine Clinic. These consultations are generally short-term, and referrals can be made if longer-term counseling is identified as a need. 

Furthermore, the wing program is an extension of the Air Force Reserve's Psychological Health Advocacy Program, which provides formal classes such as:

Personalities in the Workplace: a 45-minute training on different strengths and challenges each person brings to their work area.

The Most Important Day: A training on how to effectively communicate with your spouse without escalating, yelling or belittling.

Impulsivity: A 30-minute presentation about the neurobiology of making impulsive decision--and why they frequently become bad decisions.

"Each installation will identify its own needs, but we can assist with whatever is appropriate with our location," Morrow said. "We will do quite a bit of resource coordination and helping Reservists find services within their [residential] area that are appropriate."
