Winter brings cold-weather gear out from closets and with those warm outer garments comes a reminder for the proper wear of the sage green fleece jacket.

The sage green fleece with slick shoulders is currently approved as outerwear without rank insignia, name and service tape, said Chief Master Sgt. Gloria J. Bennett, 446th Airlift Wing command chief.

However, added Chief Bennett, "Effective October 1, 2010 wear of the sage green fleece as an outer garment must include rank insignia, name and service tapes stitched onto removable Velcro-backed cloth panels."

Guidelines for proper wear of the sage green fleece as outerwear are:

1. Wear over the Airman Battle Uniform or ABU coat/top, not over just a T-shirt or thermal underwear. Sage green fleece cannot be worn with Battle Dress Uniform or BDUs.
2. Keep the jacket zipped at least halfway.

3. Keep the collar down if it is not zipped to the top.

4. The length of the green fleece should match as closely as

possible to the length of the ABU coat/top.

5. Sleeves must kept down - never roll them up.

6. The jacket must remain neat and serviceable at all times.

Other cold weather items which can be worn with the sage green fleece include black or sage green leather, suede or knit gloves; black or sage green watch caps; black scarves; and black ear muffs.
Questions regarding proper wear of any uniform item should be directed to your unit first sergeant.
