Annual fishing event to honor military families Published July 6, 2012 By Somer Breeze-Hanson Northwest Guardian JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. -- Servicemembers and their families are invited to the second annual Take a Warrior Fishing event at American Lake on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, July 14. The free event is hosted by Evergreen Bass Club in Tacoma and the Catch a Special Thrill Foundation, which promotes community-based outdoor recreation experiences through fishing. "It's to give back to the military for what they've done and continue to do for us," CAST Executive Director Jim Owens said. "To make it a fun time for them and their family." Owens partnered his Renton organization with Evergreen last year for the inaugural event that welcomed 60 military members and their families. The organizations also encourage wounded warriors to attend, in the belief that fishing is the ultimate therapeutic activity. Check-in begins at 6 a.m. with a free hot breakfast at Russell's Landing on Lewis North. The participants will load up in boats and enjoy a half day of fishing until a barbecue lunch is served at noon. No fishing license is required to participate and rods, reels and tackle boxes will be provided. All participants will be able to keep all the equipment they use, and each will also receive a T-shirt. "We want to introduce them or re-introduce them to fishing and hope by giving them the equipment, they'll continue to fish on their own," Owens said. Participants only need to dress appropriately for the weather, which could mean rain gear or sunscreen, by the way the year is going, Owens said. A hat and sunglasses are also recommended for being out on the water. Seattle Seahawks players, coaches, Sea Gals, the Blue Thunder drum line and mascot Blitz will also make special appearances in support of the event. "It's a great opportunity for the whole community," Owens said. "It's nice to be able to say a thank you to the military for what they do and the sacrifices they continue to make." Space is limited for the event and early registration is encouraged. Contact Lisa Crowell at 966-8644 or lisa.crowell@amedd.army.mil to register.
