MLB, People Magazine to salute veterans, service members at All-Star Game

MCCHORD FIELD, Wash. --  Major League Baseball and People Magazine are teaming up to recognize current service members and veterans for their dedication and community service to the country.

Each MLB team will select a military member or veteran, based on nominations from the general public, to appear at the 2013 All-Star Game, July 17 in New York and be recognized prior to the game. Nominees can be made through the MLB's website and are due May 17.

"Major League Baseball considers it both a privilege and a responsibility to honor and assist our troops in any way we can," said Bud Selig, MLB commissioner. "We are proud to support this initiative, and we ask our fans to join us in this effort to raise awareness and funds for this important cause."

The Seattle Mariners' organization also shows their support and gratitude for the U.S. armed forces.

"The Seattle Mariners are proud to stand with the men and women who serve our nation," said Chuck Armstrong, Mariners' team president. "We have asked a lot of them and their families, and working with Major League Baseball to recognize their service and accomplishments is a small gesture of thanks that we can make."

Both Armstrong and Howard Lincoln, Mariners' CEO and chair, are Vietnam-era U.S. Navy veterans.

The MLB, in conjunction with the McCormick Foundation, created Welcome Back Veterans to inspire Americans to reach out and assist Veterans, and has donated more than $23 million for treatment of veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and create clinics throughout the country to help veterans and their families.
