Sailors Participate in Burger Eating Contest
American Forces Network Headquarters
Sept. 18, 2011 | 1:08
The hamburger is traditionally thought of as American food, but back in the 1950’s when U.S. Sailors started coming to Sasebo, Japan, they introduced the burger to the Japanese culture. Over the years the Japanese have made variations to the hamburger adding eggs and several other unique ingredients, which has evolved into the now popular, the Sasebo burger. These variations were celebrated at the annual Sasebo burger eating contest, which pitted three cities’ own twist on the burger to a taste test. Petty officer John Wagner caught up with one fleet activities Sasebo Sailor who had a mouthful to say about judging the contest.
